ALO? HALLÓ! – The Technical and Cultural History of Telephony
☎ Would you like to try a hundred-year-old crank telephone, just like the ones you’ve seen in black-and-white films? Or perhaps a military field telephone? Would you be tempted to send a message in Morse code? Would you like to see unique desk telephones made for MIKLÓS HORTHY and JÁNOS KÁDÁR?
Then come to the Museum of Communism in Sfântu Gheorghe and discover the exhibition “Hello? HALLÓ! – The Technical and Cultural History of Telephony”! Among the more than 150 objects on display, you’ll be able to explore different stages in the history of telephony, from wall-mounted magneto telephones and candlestick-style desk phones to rotary-dial models.
The exhibition is organized by the Budapest History Museum, Sepsi Teletár, Sfântu Gheorghe City Hall, the “Kónya Ádám” Cultural Centre, and the Red Star Museum ( Muzeul Stelei Roșii ), wit h the support of the Covasna County Council. Visitors will discover local-battery telephones and models powered by a telephone exchange, military and field telephones, a manual telephone switchboard, and a Morse telegraph.
The exhibition will be officially opened on Thursday, 22 October, at 5:00 PM by RÉTYI Eszter, Director of the Museum of Communism, and TÓTH-BIRTAN Csaba, Deputy Mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe. Following the opening ceremony, MAGDÓ Csaba, technical museum curator and telecommunications researcher at the Postal Museum in Budapest, and BENDA Károly, private collector, will lead a guided tour of the exhibition.
Please note: the door will only open if you ring the bell using the 60-year-old telephone in the entrance hall! 📞🌝
