Mikó Castle - Székely Equestrian Museum

 🏰 We invite you to discover Mikó Castle in Olteni, a place where the history and noble heritage of Covasna come to life.

Recently restored and reopened to the public, the castle is now home to the Székely Equestrian Museum, where you can discover the history of the Mikó family, the story of the Olteni stud farm and the equestrian world of the former estate.

🏛️ The Mikó Castle is also part of the “Route of Curias from Transylvania”, one of the 12 cultural heritage routes developed at national level. This route brings together 13 former Hungarian noble residences in this part of the country, offering a unique insight into Transylvania’s aristocratic heritage and historic architecture. 

✨ Built between 1820 and 1827 by Count Miklós Mikó Jr., the castle impresses with its Neoclassical architecture and the atmosphere of a 19th-century noble residence. One detail makes its story even more fascinating: art historian Károly Bugár-Mészáros identified similarities between Mikó Castle and the Élysée Palace in Paris, the former residence of Napoleon. The façade, roof and layout of the building are reminiscent of the famous French palace.

🎨 The murals created in the early 1830s and attributed to local master Péter Bodor take you into the aristocratic world of the time. In the men’s quarters, you will discover scenes inspired by the Napoleonic Wars and views of European cities; in the women’s apartments, idyllic scenes; while the Great Hall features hunting scenes.

🌿 And if you would like to imagine what the estate looked like in its heyday, picture an orchard, a vegetable garden, a greenhouse for exotic fruits and an English-style park with an ornamental fountain. The estate also included stables, a blacksmith’s workshop and even a small island on the Olt River, with a bathing house.

🐎 Today, equestrian tradition is one of the central stories of the castle.

At the Székely Equestrian Museum, you can learn more about the Olteni stud farm and the Kisbéri-Trakehnen bloodline, brought back into the spotlight, among other things, by the stallion Szemafor Széltoló, who returned to Olteni in 2021.

🏛️ The history of the place goes back even further than the castle itself. Archaeological research has confirmed the existence of a Roman fort (castrum) on the site of the present-day residence.

🎬 The castle also has a cinematic chapter: in 2023, scenes for the Italian production “Vita mia”, directed by Edoardo Winspeare, were filmed here.
