🗺️ What can Romania do with the opportunities offered by tourism?

Romania has extraordinary tourist attractions, but the sector’s potential is much greater than what we are currently able to capitalize on.

How can we transform our natural and cultural assets into a globally competitive tourism offering that simultaneously creates real value for local communities and the economy?

These questions will be addressed at the professional event “Romanian Tourism: From Potential to Performance,” organized by the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Romania (CCE-R), which will take place on September 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., at Zabola Estate on the Mikes estate in Zăbala.

💡 Rather than a general discussion about opportunities in Romanian tourism, the event aims to ask specific questions: What is hindering development today, what needs to change, and what lessons can we learn from examples such as Switzerland’s?

🌿 Romania has more to offer in tourism.

Transylvania is an excellent example of the tourism assets Romania possesses. Nature, historical heritage, castles, villages, and traditions, as well as unique local cultures, can together create experiences that foreign visitors are willing to travel for.

The question, however, is how we can make these assets more visible, more accessible, and more competitive in the market.
The forum will address topics such as building a stronger Romanian tourism brand, successfully positioning authentic destinations, improving service quality, training and retaining specialists, and collaboration between the public and private sectors.

What can we learn from Switzerland?

Over the decades, Switzerland has built a tourism system in which, alongside natural resources, service quality, professional expertise, training of specialists, strategic destination development, and collaboration among stakeholders play an essential role.

Participants will also analyze which Swiss experiences can be adapted and applied in Romania, taking local specificities into account.
And the event’s location was not chosen at random: Zabola Estate is a prime example of how historical and natural heritage can form the foundation of a tourism experience that preserves the authenticity of the place while also meeting the expectations of international visitors.

“Romania already has a story worth setting out to discover. The real question is how we can transform this story into a tourism offering that is attractive to visitors, generates value for local communities, and is sustainable in the long term for the country’s economy.” - this is one of the key messages of the September 17 meeting
