About

The Transylvanian Art Center and the Liszt Institute in Sfântu Gheorghe cordially invite you to the opening of the thematic exhibition The Transylvanian Helikon 100, “Circles, circles - don’t leave them” - The dialogue between image and word in the visual arts of the Transylvanian Helikon.

📜 For a hundred years, the Helikon literary circle has been not only a landmark in the history of Hungarian literature in Transylvania but also a symbol of an intellectual community that played an essential role in shaping the region’s cultural life. Organized to mark the centennial, the exhibition highlights the remarkable artistic legacy of the Helikon Literary Circle—that universe in which image and word complemented one another, giving rise to enduring values.

One of the most important intellectual communities in the Hungarian cultural life of Transylvania during the interwar period was the Helikon Literary Circle, founded in 1926. The gatherings held at the castle in Brâncovenești, at the invitation of Baron János Kemény, became a true forum for creativity, bringing together not only writers but also visual artists. The exhibition “Helikonul Ardelean 100” evokes this exceptionally rich cultural legacy, placing special emphasis on its visual dimension.

🖼 Through portraits, caricatures, book illustrations, graphic works, paintings, and sculptures, the exhibition showcases the artists who contributed to the visual identity of Helikon magazine and the publications edited by the Transylvanian Guild of Fine Arts (“Erdélyi Szépmíves Céh”), as well as those who, through their creations, enriched the artistic universe of the Helikon literary circle.

✨ Visitors will be able to discover works by figures such as Kós Károly, Bánffy Miklós, Szolnay Sándor, Stróbl Alajos, Gallasz Nándor, Szervátiusz Jenő, Gy. Szabó Béla, Buday György, T. Karácsony Emmy, Makkai Piroska, and Nagy Imre, whose famous series of portraits continues to define the visual legacy of the Helikon literary circle.

The works on display come from state, ecclesiastical, and private collections, brought together in an exceptional selection that offers a comprehensive overview of the artistic heritage of the Transylvanian Helikon.

We warmly invite you to join us on a unique cultural journey, where image and word, literature and the visual arts engage in a dialogue spanning over a century of history. 🤎
