Dasarath Basu arrived in the 11th century in Bengal from northern India. One of his scions, Raghunandan Basu, was reconfirmed the Zamindar & Jagir of Ulpur by the Moghuls in the 16th century. Shuvendu Basu Roy Chowdhury of Ulpur was a member of the same family, which was scattered into India and across the globe after the partition of India in 1947, when Ulpur became part of Bangladesh. Shuvendu married Countess Katalin Mikes of Zabola. The Wooden Barn Guesthouse in Zăbala is actually converted from a hay barn that was built in 1934. During the conversion, the whole of the old building has been preserved and the traditional design has also retained the traditional triple distribution of the barn.
