Ciomatu Mare Mountains

Ciomatu Mare Mountains

About

Ciomatu Mare Mountain is the last and youngest member of the volcanic Carpathian Mountains that form an arc. Traces of former volcanic activity can still be seen today in the conical form of the mountain, in the crater lake of Sfânta Ana and in the Mohos Peat Bog, as well as in the healing springs and sulfur-smelling mofettes erupting from the deep. The ancient ruins of Bálványos Castle bear witness to the valiant past of this region.
The best starting point for exploring the most interesting sights of the mountains is Băile Bálványos or Bálványos Resort. The difficulty level of the routes is easy or medium and the longest is 6.5 km. Those who approach the mountains by train should be prepared for longer walks. From Bixad to the Cecele peak, you have to follow the path marked with a blue cross for fourteen kilometers, it can take 5-6 hours to overcome the 1200 m level difference.
