The Beör Palace

The Beör Palace, one of the most impressive buildings in the capital of Covasna County, is located at the corner of Kossuth Lajos Street and Martinovics Ignác Street, a stone's throw from the centre of Sfântu Gheorghe. The two-storey palace was built in 1908 by mercer Ferenc Szőke and was named after Kálmán Beör, a music teacher and choir conductor at the college, who married Szőke's daughter. The house became known as the family residence of Count Beör from Kövesd. Zsigmond Beör, the founder of the family, received the noble charter on 15 July 1679 from Mihály Apafi I, Prince of Transylvania. 

After nationalisation, the property was used for a long time as a doctor's surgery, and today it houses the headquarters of Hungarian political parties and the offices of various NGOs. For a time, the city TV studio of Sfântu Gheorghe also operated there. The deteriorating building was structurally restored and its image was renovated in 2010 at the expense of the town of Sfântu Gheorghe. The building, built in neoclassical style with traces of Art Nouveau, was originally orange and after the renovation was given its current peach blossom colour. The basement of the building houses the Memorial House of the Victims of the Communist Dictatorship, which opened on 23 April 2014.
